Nothing gets my goat up like discrimination. Be it race, size, sexuality, age or disability, choosing to legally or socially discriminate against a part of society because you personally "aren't like that" is wrong, wrong, wrong.
Prime Minister John Howard says that he is about to adjust the Marriage Act in order to exclude the possibility of gays and lesbians (and probably transsexuals) getting married because:
"...he was just stating what most people thought."
Let me tell you something, John Howard. "Most people" I know do not support a ban on same sex marriage.
"Government sources said gay marriage was a "below the line" issue that Federal Cabinet was considering - meaning that it may take action without official departmental briefs or submissions."
This means that if you, the non-discriminatory type of person wants to put a stop to this action, you have to write to the government, phone your local representative, get in touch with Labor, and whomever else you can think of to make sure that your views are heard.
Labor, by the way, is NOT likely to oppose the changes, so you must speak to them and let them know that you want them to stand up for human rights in this case.
If you don't speak out, the government and the Labor party will take it as a given that you don't object. Apparently the Australian Family Association has been vigourously lobbying the government to make these changes because they strongly oppose gay rights.
Don't be apathetic. Please, send an email, write or phone the following contacts and do your bit to oppose an amendment to the Marriage Act to exclude gays and lesbians from being married.
