Alexandra's here, and yea verily, we have travelled the lengths and breadths of Perth. West to the Beach, North to Joondalup, East to Mundaring Weir in the Hills, South to Freo. The cover all your bases, package tour.

The night Alexandra arrived, we met after work in Northbridge. Our mission that night was to have Belgian beers, chilli mussels and laughs with Schmendy and Ruza. Good stuff. A very funny comment was inappropriately made by the waitress about 'large appetites' when she was explaining the menu to Alexandra, which Schmendy and I picked up upon and delivered large sarcasms right back, afterwards. Yeesh. Can't a girl have a main meal without the digs about weight?

Later that night, we saw Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Wotsit. Not bad - the freaky werewolf stuff was chilling. I thought it was too scary for kids under ten, but Jules' kids, Jacob (8) and Emily (10) told me tonight that they had no problems with it. *shrug*

Saturday was Shove Alexandra in the Indian Ocean Day. We went to Cottesloe Beach, via Karrinyup (north, but directly west of here in Nollamara) and along the coastline. Took a few piccies of Alexandra swanning about on the Cott, which was Most Fun, but then the horizontal rain came in. I was warning Ms A that the rain was coming, but she didn't believe me. Rain, Alexandra! Rain, Alexandra! Rain...RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN. Hee! We were a little soaked, although Alexandra's pants were more soaked by an accidental wave moment.

From Cottesloe, we drove down the coastline to Fremantle. Looked for an All Day Breakfast joint and ended up at the Dome. Yum! Lovely ADB, with a side of hollandaise sauce. Much sauntering was to be had at the Freo markets, where we discovered a woman who makes gorgeous, colorful pictures of bbws in various scenarios. I encouraged her to get the artwork online, on ebay, on something...its good stuff and deserves to go further than Freo. Besides, she's not able to do certain products because of the other stalls already offering those things.

From Fremantle, up the Canning Highway, along the river to gaze at the water, the surfcats, surfkites, beautiful vistas and glorious houses. We drove to South Perth, along the shoreline and again with the beautiful houses and river vistas.

From there, to UWA, then Kings Park. *pant pant pant* Tiny walk around Kings Park, then a quick drive through the city. Vroooom.

From Perth to home. Made spaghetti bolognaise with red wine, mushrooms, beef and other stuff thrown in. A good idea given that we're all suffering a bit with colds at the moment. Nothing bad, mmkay, but sniffly and headachey and sore throats.

Today we travelled north to Joondalup, to sit on the hillside overlooking Joondalup Lake. Its a very special place, because you can handfeed the galahs, twenty-eights, corellas and even the kookaburras when they are in the right mood. Gorgeous way to spend the afternoon. We even made yummy buns to eat there in the afternoon light.

From Joondalup to the east - Mundaring. We dropped in on friend Jules for a visit and a cuppa tea. Drove back as the sun was going down, and then had dinner in Northbridge. We were going to see the male bellydancer, but obviously there weren't enough bookings because no show evolved that we could see. Pooh. Now we're spending the rest of the evening watching Scrubs and knitting.

*sniff* Meh. Headaches, sore throat and a slightly sniffy nose. Grrrreat. We've been fighting off germs all this week, Pete and I. Luckily, neither of us has developed the lurgy to the extent that we need to either spend a day in bed or propped up on the lounge with blankies and tissues. Man, that would be soooo annoying right now.

Im spending today cleaning the house, whilst Pete goes off to a LAN. Two loads of washing done so far, one off the line, about five more to go. So much easier to clean up when he's not around, but at least he did a fair bit of the dishes whilst I was out doing the last shopping, before I start back on full time work on Monday. God knows how Im going to cope with the idea that I can't just shop during the daytime to get stuff. I won't get home until after the shops close from now on. So it will be Thursday night or Saturday mornings from now on. Bring on seven day a week shopping, I say.

Got such a fright when I came home yesterday, after my Last Shift. Once I'd gotten out of the car, I realised that I could hear this frantic meowing noise nearby - it was Monty (eek!) trying to push himself underneath the gate to get to me!!! Our cat never ever goes outdoors, so I thought Robbed! Door Left Open! Window! Eeek! Threw down my stuff, went over to the gate, picked him up (purrrrpurrrpurrrrpurrrr) and took him inside as fast as I could. Poor baby! No doors were open, no windows...hmmm, what was going on? It wasn't until I opened the ensuite bathroom door, that I solved the mystery. The darn cat might have been in the bathroom, the wind might have blown through and sucked the door shut, frightening the cat, who leapt up onto the narrow shelf and then up the five centimetres of flywire open. Only to fall out. Hence, frightened kitty and time spent outside. Thank crap he didn't try to leave the back yard.

We went to an engagement party last night in Thornlie, for Pete's friend Guy and his fiance, Julie, who is a nurse. The funny thing was that another friend of Pete's and Guy's, Luigi, turned up as well - with Fiona Drielsma, who we knew from PUCS!!! Ha! Well, at least I had someone I knew to talk to. Good to catch up with her, because I haven't being going to the Elijah rehearsals. She's into cross-stitching - must keep that in mind, so that if I ever organise a big Stitch and Bitch event for girls, we can all bring our craft and booze along.

Turns out that Fi and Luigi have been dating for only six weeks. I met Luigi briefly, about 18 months ago, at a newsagents at the Galleria. Scored major bonus points with him, because I remembered his face, but didn't remember that he had been 'very overweight' at the time. Luigi is now the slimmest he's ever been - Pete was certainly freaked out at the amount of weight he'd lost. Nice guy, who is into Age of Mythology and other similar games, so we are going to have to set up some kind of LAN. (Funny side note: apparently, my ex-bf from hell, Rob, met Luigi the other night, but kept calling him Mario, which obviously shat Luigi orff. Bwah!)

Knitting Update

Nearly finished Ruza's oatmeal coloured, Rustica yarn scarf. I might do that tonight, actually, there's a couple of trashy films on the telly.

Oh. Thank. Ghod. Today, from 10am til 3pm is my last day at work. No more shifts! All gone bye bye! The constant pain of feet, burning hip joints and the incredible dullness of days make it a very uncomfortable way to make a living indeed.

I shall look on the positive side, however.

* My co-workers were all very helpful and friendly from the beginning. The tills are not easy to learn how to use. You don't have a screen that shows where you are in the transaction, nor can you go back or forward easily. There are codes to remember and three different methods of processing different cheques and vouchers. Thank goodness for the more experienced and patient staff who guided me through learning how to use the darn tills.

* I can now say that I have retail experience, which translates into a useable skill in many fields of work.

* I can also say that I have had sales experience in perfumes, shoes, toys and cosmetics.

* The work got us through some very hard financial times this year, making the difference between being able to pay for petrol/food at times. Im incredibly grateful for that little bit of income, even if some weeks I only got to work for three hours, total.

* I discovered that I am actually a size 10.5 in shoes, not a 10, as a result of my three months in the shoe dept. No wonder the shoes that I had been buying were slightly too small. I also discovered a new brand that are better for my feet as a result of this work. I feel more confident about buying shoes, overall.

* I got to try out quite a few new perfumes, discovering new brands that I like. I won't feel so intimidated by the selection process in the future, now that I know 'the rules' of perfume shopping. Ditto with cosmetics, although I still haven't discovered that perfect shade of light brown eyeshadow that I am looking for.

* I'll probably shop more often at Myer now because I know what stock they have. Whereas beforehand, I assumed that it was all pricey. Its not. The sales are particularly good value, too.

I'll be sad to leave the friends that I've made at Myer. They're all "work friends", however. The type of friend that is good whilst you are at work, but you've never really had time to develop a deeper understanding of each other. If nothing else, I'll drop in to say hello to them on a somewhat regular basis.

A new beginning...

I start work at my new job on Monday. Amazing coinky-dink - the person who is filling in on the job that I'll be doing, is the daughter of the leader of the website committee that Im on for the state library. Jo was most amused when she found that out, as were I. Perth is such a bloody small place.

I have several projects on the go...

1) Fiona's mixed feather/black acrylic scarf. Tis now 55cms long. Might even be finished by the end of winter at this rate. Its very pretty. Gold and purple feathers, which I haven't seen much in public. Most people tend to go for the pink fizz stuff.

2) Ruza's Rustica scarf in camel - halfway there. Im doing this one on size 8 needles with a very very loose tension, so one ball = an hour or so of knitting. About 15 stitches wide, with a really nice, textury result. The yarn is very soft, and goes thick to thin. Weird stuff to knit.

Given that I've taken so long with Fi's more complicated scarf, I might also send her over a scarf in Rustica Coffee brown colour.

3) Hot Pink/Purple (warm tones) thing. Not sure what to do with it yet. Could end up being something for a kid. Shall wait and see what it speaks to me.

4) Shiv's wrist/hand warmers in black acrylic. One side completed, the other one has been started. Due to the tiny needles, its a bit more taxing on the hands.

I may yet have a go at some leg warmers on circular needles.

When Im a little more skilled, I'd like to have a go at this Moebius Scarf.

I Am

Which tarot card are you?

Yeesh. Every frickin' time I do the tarot, I draw this particular card as the one representing myself. I've always wanted to make myself a top with the High Priestess icon on it. Which reminds me, I haven't had a look at my astrology and other studies in so long its not funny. Must be getting pretty rusty.

Pete and I just went for a ride down to the nearest petrol station (about a kilometre away), to pump up the tyres in my bike and grab an iced coffee each. Mmmmmmmmm, iced coffeeeeee. Weather's pretty nice at the moment - around 15 degrees celsius. Am hoping for some more rain tomorrow. Going to put the washed bedsheets outside, so that they'll be rain-softened by the time they're dry.

We've worked out that the cheapest way to get to our New! Work! Places! is to drive to the nearest railway station (five to ten minute drive), park ($1/day!) and catch the train in. Not only do we save time (1 hour via bus, just to get to the bus station from here) but I feel a little safer leaving my car in a supervised area.

I need to get a battery for my mobile phone, too. Anyone know how much they cost these days?

From an article discussing who is likely to win the next Australian federal election, comes this pithy little quote:

"Understand, those who think about issues, read the newspapers, discuss events, make up only about 10 per cent of voters."

I knew the figure had to be reasonably low, but only 10%??? Why aren't people more involved in what is going on around them? Sept 11 was such a shock to the US public, not just because of the enormous loss of life and permanent change to the NY city skyline, but because they never saw it coming. They had no idea that there were people in the world that hated them that much. So why aren't people more interested? I guess the answer is that if it doesn't involve them personally, its too much bother, too much compared to everything else going on in their lives, until you get a huge event like Sept 11.

The article continues....

I think it means the critical target group for the election is going to be the $40,000 to $50,000 earners, with or without children; and second, generation X voters, who basically have been ignored, or at least those who aren't about to have a baby soon.

"I mean, for the first time generation X is interested in politics, largely because of Mark Latham. In fact, I think they are almost the key to the election."

And who is generation X?

"Late 20s and 30s. They've been totally disengaged by the political process. Now they're just starting to get vaguely interested for the first time in ages. Why? Well, politics just isn't a factor in their lives. No importance whatsoever. Their value systems and interests eschew politics. Latham has stirred their interest. He's left them hanging there, but they're ready to be engaged. Not a lot, but a bit.

Im sooooooo ready to be engaged. By the government. *ahem* *LOL* About time we Gen X'ers were recognised by the political puntsters as being ready for woo. Its recommended in the article that if Howard wants to win this election, he has to widen the benefits being given to those earning $52k per year to people who are earning $40k per year. This would include Gen X'ers and help to sway their vote.

Personally, unless something fairly serious happens, I think Bush, Howard and Blair will be turfed in the next elections for these countries. Their time is over, the whole Iraq situation was a grave mistake built upon a foundation of lies and greed.
